Getting started
What do I need to run JustShot?
macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later, on either an Apple Silicon or Intel Mac. The download is about 3.6 MB.
If you are on an older macOS, the app will not launch. There is no build for earlier versions.
Is the app free?
Yes. Capturing, annotating, recording, scrolling capture and saving locally are free forever, with no account and no time limit.
You can also use the free tier for basic cloud features, but the paid plans are only for video upload, plus more storage, retention and link controls.
Do I need an account?
Only to share to the cloud. Everything the app does on your own machine works signed out and offline.
Why does macOS ask for Screen Recording permission?
macOS requires it for any app that captures the screen, including plain screenshots. Without it the system will not hand over any image at all.
Accessibility permission is separate and only used to detect window edges and to scroll a page during a scrolling capture. Microphone access is requested only if you record video with sound.
Sharing
Who can see my share links?
Anyone who has the link. Links are unguessable rather than private: there is no directory and no search, but a link that gets forwarded works for whoever receives it.
For anything sensitive, set a password, set an expiry date, or turn on burn-after-read so the link stops working after a single view.
Are my uploads encrypted?
They are sent over HTTPS and stored encrypted at rest by our storage provider.
They are not end-to-end encrypted, which means we could technically access a file if legally compelled or while investigating an abuse report. We would rather say that plainly than imply a guarantee we cannot make.
Can I delete something after sharing it?
Yes, from the dashboard, at any time. Deleting removes the file and kills the link immediately.
Anyone who already downloaded a copy still has it - that is true of any sharing tool.
Can I see who opened my link?
No. You get a count of how many times a link was opened, and nothing else. We do not record who, when, or from where.
Plans and storage
What are the limits on each plan?
Free: 500 MB, up to 100 files, kept 30 days, images only. Cloud Basic: 10 GB, files up to 500 MB, kept 365 days, video included. Cloud Pro: 200 GB, files up to 2 GB, no time limit, video included.
My old screenshots disappeared. Why?
This is the part of JustShot that surprises people most, so it is worth being direct: uploads are deleted automatically when a plan limit is reached, oldest first, and files older than your plan's retention period are removed too.
It is deliberate - it is what makes a free tier possible - but it means deletion is routine and permanent. JustShot is a sharing tool, not a backup. Keep your own copies of anything that matters.
What happens if I cancel?
Your plan keeps working until the end of the period you have paid for. After that we hold everything for a further 30 days, and email you before that window closes.
Once it closes, anything above the free limit is deleted permanently. Resubscribing during those 30 days restores full access with nothing lost.
Can I get a refund?
Yes - email us within 14 days of buying and we will refund in full, no reason needed. Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record, so the refund comes from them.
Why can't I upload a video on the free plan?
Video is a paid feature. Recordings are far larger than screenshots, and a free tier that carried them would not be sustainable at 500 MB.
Recording itself still works on the free plan - you can save the file locally. It just cannot be uploaded.
Privacy and data
Does the app track me?
No. There is no telemetry, no usage analytics, no crash reporting and no tracking of any kind, in the app or on the website.
The app contacts the network for exactly two reasons: to check whether an update exists, and - only if you choose to - to sign in and upload.
Do you read my screenshots?
No. We do not read, index, scan or analyse uploads, and we do not use them to train anything.
Do you send marketing email?
No. We send exactly two messages, both about your own account: a welcome when you first sign in, and a warning before files are deleted after a subscription lapses. There is no newsletter.
Can I export or delete everything?
Yes. Settings has a CSV export of everything you have uploaded, and a delete-account option that removes your files, your details and your sign-in record.
Updates and troubleshooting
Why did my JustShot shortcuts change?
JustShot used to use ⌘⇧3 and ⌘⇧4, which macOS reserves for its own screenshots. macOS handles those keys first, so those two captures never actually reached JustShot. From 1.4.0 the defaults are ⌥⌘1 through ⌥⌘5.
You can change them at any time in Settings → Hotkeys. If you would rather keep using ⌘⇧3 and ⌘⇧4, that same pane has step-by-step instructions for turning macOS's own screenshot shortcuts off first, which frees the keys for JustShot.
How do updates work?
The app updates itself. It checks for a new version, downloads it, installs it and relaunches, so the download page is only ever needed once.
You can turn automatic updates off in the app's settings, though we may stop supporting older versions.
Something is broken. What should I do?
Email us with your macOS version, your JustShot version (shown under About), and the share link if it relates to a specific upload. If something is broken on our side rather than yours, saying what you were doing when it happened is the fastest route to a fix.
Still stuck?
Write to contact@justshot.net with your macOS version, your JustShot version, and a share link if the question is about a specific upload. That is usually enough to answer it in one reply.
